Today, I found myself deeply moved by a message. The speaker spoke on the story of Hannah from 1 Samuel 1, and there was one line that gripped my heart and hasn’t let go since:
“Hannah pleaded with God for a son, when what she really needed was The Son.”
Wow. Just sit with that for a moment.
How many times have we found ourselves in Hannah’s shoes—crying out to God, begging Him to give us something we desperately desire? Maybe it’s a relationship, a job, a child, healing, or even a ministry opportunity. These longings aren’t wrong. They’re real. And like Hannah, they often come from a place of deep pain, frustration, and hope.
But the speaker’s words reminded me that sometimes, in the middle of our desperation, we miss the deeper invitation. The invitation to seek not just something from God—but to seek God Himself.

Hannah wanted a son. And God, in His kindness, did give her one. But the Son she truly needed—the One we all truly need—was Jesus. The Messiah. The one who fills the aching spaces in our souls that no earthly gift ever could.
Sometimes God delays or even denies certain desires because He knows they might become our idol—the thing we look to for purpose, worth, and identity. But when we let our unmet desires lead us to deeper intimacy with Jesus, we find something far more fulfilling than what we asked for. We find Him.
So, what are you pleading for today? What do you keep bringing to God, hoping He’ll say “yes”?
Pause and ask yourself:
- If I never received this thing, would Jesus still be enough?
- Is this desire drawing me closer to Christ, or distracting me from Him?
- What does my longing reveal about my heart’s greatest need?
This isn’t about guilt—it’s about grace. It’s about remembering that our Savior doesn’t just want to give us good gifts; He wants to be our greatest gift.
Hannah’s story teaches us that it’s okay to bring our desires to God—He welcomes our honesty and vulnerability. But in the waiting, may we also learn to desire Him above all else.
Because sometimes, we ask for a son, when what we really need is The Son.
And in Him, we truly lack nothing.
